You might have seen a wildlife program where herds of wildebeest* complete their relentless migration across the scorched plains of the serengeti, braving droughts, bush fires, and crocodile infested rivers to reach their ultimate goals.
You may know about the swallow which returns to Africa every winter**, but have you heard of the Arctic Tern that flies from the North to the South pole, and back, every year.
Meanwhile, in the depths of the oceans humpback whales drift around the oceans in a vast unobserved ballet that no-one can fathom***.
But despite all these massive and documented wonders of nature; I bet you've never seen a data migration taking place, have you?
Well the answer is yes, and no. Yes - becuase it just happened. If you weren't watching, you'll have missed it. And no, because it takes place in secret, in locked rooms and data centers, in darkened rooms where geeks sit around and watch blinking lights happening as data flows from one database to another. And that process has not been seen, or turned into a BBC documentary, because, quite frankly, who'd want to watch it?****
So just as you don't know that spring is here and that the cuckoos having been flying far and high until you hear the first calling each year, you won't have noticed the data migrating but it is now all here. Well, mostly all here - at least.
I've migrated everything I can but several things weren't worth moving or have lost context. The forum is not able to be moved in anything approaching a reasonable fashion and so has been shelved for now. The rest of the data is now here though and I will add it to the navigation in the next few days so you can begin to find where it is.
Granted, there is still a lot missing, a lot of holes in the site, just as there was in the last one. But that is not my job to fill. This site is a lot easier to use (my belied back up by user comments) so please, climb on board, join the stampede, and lets make this a site for the society to be proud of, something that we can hold up to everyone else's and say - read this, it's the definitive answer to your questions. And if you can't provide the answers yourself, then please at least provide the questions, so that this can become the resource that I needed and could not find when starting out, and many other people will need in the future.
* or Gnu, but that's a separate techie joke and I'm above doing that. Just. Despite the quality of the other puns that have made it past QC and into this article....
** To harvest coconuts, obviously....
*** Sorry.
**** What do you mean that I resemeble that comment?
